Employ ‘Listening therapy’- Ask a trusted friend or family member if they can make themselves available to you for 40 minutes or so , in a place free of interruptions and ask if they will simply LISTEN to you. Specifically also request that they do NOT give advice . This is important because the purpose of this request and exercise is that it allows you to be ‘heard’ and most importantly to “vent” your feelings , to say what’s uppermost in your mind. This is an amazingly powerful tool and can bring almost immediate relief from the strong thoughts and emotions that can seem to be trapped within us. This can be a little, confronting to do, if we are not used to sharing our inner most thoughts, particularly at a vulnerable time like going through a break up- BUT the benefits can be huge. After the ‘session’ , thank your friend and let them know you appreciate them being there for you and allowing you to ‘process’ your thoughts and feelings.
